Q: Spinal neuropathy damage or MS ?

I have had back pain for no apparent reason starting in March. A month later, I was developing numbness, tingling and pins and needles sensation in my hands and feet. These symptoms continued and progressed into my arms and legs. In June, I had a stroke-like episode, but no clot or hemorraging. This episode was marked by several TIA's and temporary blindness in my left eye before I went unconscious for 3 hours. When I awoke, I couldn't remember what had happened. 3 weeks after the episode, the neuro found that my right side was noticeably weaker, had decreased sensation and pain. No testing was done.

After this, I had these exacerbations that would start out by lasting from seconds to minutes where I would feel so exhausted, have ripping and tearing pain, numbness/tingling, dizziness and difficulty speaking (words were mixed up). My feet were so numb that I couldn't feel the pain of a cut or bruise.

Starting in July, I couldn't remember things or people, with the same above symptoms. I went to see a neurologist who performed the scans and bloodwork, emg's, etc., but nothing was medically wrong with me. The EMG showed mild inability to relax in the c4-c7 areas. The neuro gave me Neurotin, but new symptoms occurred after taking it and after stopping.Terrible feet spasms that make my feet curl under, fatigue that got worse in hot weather, and weakness in my hands slowly progressing to my entire body. The exacerbations increased from minutes, and now last up to 6 days. These exacerbations included muscle spasms happening in various spots on my legs. I've had them last off and on throughout the day. Now the spasms and numbness get worse between 7pm-11pm. My right side is most affected with loss of use of my right hand (unable to hold objects).

In the last 2 months. the burning has developed into my spinal cord area. My symptoms are so severe that they have kept me up for days and nights at a time. I asked my neuro to give me something for the pain or to help me sleep, but he refuses. I finally asked a PCP and he gave me Lyrica. That seems to be helping. Then he told me I might have MS? Just today, he put me on Baclofen.

I would like to know if there are other rare diseases that mimic MS or if this is the beginning of MS or just some spinal neuropathy damage? Please tell me your thoughts.

MS is a tricky creature.

Yes there are diseases that mimic MS and visa-versa.

When I took neurontin my pain increased so my neuro would up my dose, etc. So I weaned myself off...pain decreased and went away...he swore it was not the neurontin that was causing the pain. I fired him.

Baclofen has worked wonders for me. Leg cramps / spasms.

I'd suggest you get rid of your neuro that refused to help you with your pain.

Lyrica...it helps with nerve pain...just be careful taking such...it can increase cravings and make one feel drunk at times (me)...I rarely take any.

Get a second opinion from a reputable MS specialist. From there the appropriate tests can be done to either confirm or rule out other diseases.

In the meantime a caring doctor would treat your symptoms and not toss you to the side.
