About 20-30 percent of males who contract mumps after puberty will develop an infection of the testes (Orchitis). While there may be a reduction in sperm count following this infection, sterility is rare. The onset is usually six to seven days after parotid swelling occurs. The symptoms of orchitis include high temperature, chills, headache, backache and severe testicular pain, tenderness and swelling. One or both testes may be affected.
