In 90% of cases with high blood pressure (hypertension) the cause is unknown. Such a condition is called primary, idiopathic or essential hypertension. The only cure for essential hypertension is to take a proper dose of an appropriate anti-hypertensive drug(s) regularly. Having a healthy lifestyle (practicing physical activity, less mental stress, keeping normal body weight, quiting smoking...) is also very important.

In the rest of the 10% of all hypertension cases the reason for the high blood pressure is another disorder (kidney disorder, endocrine disorder, etc.). This type of hypertension is called secondary, symptomatic or non-essential hypertension. In these cases, hypertension is treated by treating the primary disorder if possible.

You may want to consult a cardiologist about your condition.
