Q: sore throat in evenings

My throat has been bothering me for over 2 weeks now, where it is uncomfortable and hurts to swallow. When it first started bothering me, I thought it was the sign of me getting sick since that is usually what happens when I get sick. However, the only other symptoms I've had are clearing my throat and a cough randomly throughout the day and when I'm sleeping. My throat seems to hurt primarily in the evening regardless of if I'm at home or not and when I go to sleep I will wake up coughing a few times during the night. I went to my primary physician yesterday and they tested for strep (negative) and took a throat culture. They suggested that I may want to see a ENT specialist. As background info, I do have seasonal allergies and asthma but I don't have any symptoms like I usually do when my allergies bother me.
Any advice you can provide on the cause or how to treat this would be appreciated.
