Q: Something stuck in the throat
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 8th, 2009
For the past two weeks food gets stuck on the left side of my throat and it won't go down. I drink lots of water and there's still a little piece of what I ate that stays and I'm constantly swallowing and clearing my throat to get it out. It also feels like there's a lump there too I went to an e.n.t and he prescribed Xanax for stress. Could this be
Possible? I've had my thyroid checked to see if that could be the reason and they found it low.I've been on synthroid since the age of 8 and now I'm 39. And never in my life have had problems swallowing my food.

Swallowing is a reflex that is activated when the food is pushed from the mouth into the esophagus all the way down to the stomach. Several muscles need to contract adequately in order for the swallowing reflex to occur properly. Otherwise, a feeling of food stuck in the throat might be sensed.

The food might even really cause small damage to the throat mucosa. The passage of the food might also take more time than usual to reach the stomach. There are many causes for this condition; most of them are related to neurological disorders affecting certain of the nerves responsible for the swallowing muscles.

If only a few of the nerves are affected, the symptoms are somewhat lighter. Pressure from surrounding organs or structures (thyroid gland, pathological conditions in the larynx) might cause swallowing disorders. In more severe cases, the cause for the swallowing disorder might be found in the brain.

According to the information you provided, the feeling of something in your throat might be caused by the real presence of an object (food or something else) in the throat or by the previously mentioned conditions.

You might want to have another opinion from an ear, nose, and throat specialist. If nothing is found and the swallowing reflex is found to be completely okay, then the symptoms might only be subjective, caused by stress or a form of anxiety. In this case, you might want to visit a psychotherapist to try to identify the possible cause for the feeling of something stuck in the throat.
