Q: Soma and hearing loss ?

HI,

My finace recently had back surgery and has been put on Soma, as well as other things (15mg Morphine, 30mg time release morphine, 4mg dilaudid).

She has been taking a little more than prescribed due to tolerances and insomnia and this morning she woke up and could not hear anything. Total hearing loss.

Is this something that is going to be permanent or temporary? I know soma is an unstable drug to begin with and can be dangerous and easy to OD on but I have never heard of hearing loss related to it.

Your fiance needs to see an ear nose and throat specialist ASAP, like right now.

There are several possibilities as to the cause, but sudden hearing loss like that is an emergency situation that needs to be seen by a doctor that specializes in hearing loss.

There is a viral cause to this, that needs treatment with steroids immediately to save the hearing and if treatment is not started right away, the hearing loss can be permanent.

What isn't normal is to have a sudden hearing loss like she has.

Please get her to an ENT right away.

What interesting is my withdrawal syptoms related to stopping soma was extreme ear comfort and pain as well as increased sound sensitivity. My ears would feel clogged and such things as driving in a car with an open window was intollerale when stopped taking soma
