Hello and welcome to e health forum.

There are two basic kinds of medication for the treatment of asthma:‎

A. Long-term control medications

B. Quick relief or "rescue" medications

Long-term control medications are taken every day to prevent asthma symptoms, even when your child does not ‎have symptoms. Some children may need more than one long-term control medication.‎

Types of long-term control medications include:‎

1. Inhaled steroids (such as Azmacort, Vanceril, AeroBid, Flovent) - these are almost the first choice of treatment

2. Leukotriene inhibitors (such as Singulair and Accolate)‎

3. Long-acting bronchodilators (such as Serevent) usually used with inhaled steroids

4. Cromolyn sodium (Intal) or nedocromil sodium

Since the child has expiratory wheezes, and since symptoms are not adequately controlled, steroid inhalers are definitely indicated for your child.
