Q: So I Think I'm Pregnant...Now What?

Okay, so the subject title doesn't really reflect how I feel about the situation, (I actually do know what I should be doing), but I thought it would get some of your attention. Anyway I'm 16 years old and this is my second 'Pregnancy Concern' post.

I'm sorry that this is probably going to be very long and detailed, but I've been holding this in for too long and now I just feel like I really need to talk to someone about it...So, here it is: Me and this guy had intercourse on the 18th of October; and no we did not use protection, I know we should so you don't need to tell me (Sorry if that sounded snippy covermouth ).

Now, I have an extremely irregular period, (varying from 20-35 day intervals), but I decided to sit down with a calender and try to figure out when my period should arrive. Going on a 30-day cycle my period should have arrived on approx. Oct. 20th (2 days after we had intercourse). On day 41, I started to suspect, so I took a HPT and recieved a negative. But today is day 46 and still no period. Last week I had cramps that felt like my period and I was sure it was going to start, but it never happened.

So now what? When should I take another test? When should I go for a blood test? My cycle is irregular but it has never been this long. I'm sorry to drop this on everybody, but honestly I really don't have anyone I can talk to about this in my life right now. shrug

Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Urine tests are usually accurate 14 days after intercourse. A blood test will be definitive.

When you go to Planned Parenthood, you might want to discuss birth control options with them. There are a variety of types out there, and not only will they help protect you against pregnancy (and this worry you're feeling), but some of them give you shorter lighter periods and will regulate your cycle.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Yeah they're here and they can defienetly handle all the usual stuff: Like driving me to friends and Parent-Teacher meetings...but this is definetly not somthing I want to bring up with them unless I am sure. I can't talk to anyone about this. Not without them finding out. I need to know for sure.

Yeah I have thought about it. But the last time I tried taking birth control it made me violently sick, and didn't help with my irregular cycle at all. So, I really havn't been up to testing that out again.

And don't worry. Wink I'm not worried. Trust me the only thin I am concerned about at the moment is how my parents will react to the news if I am right.

What kind of birth control did you try?

Sometimes hormonal birth control is a hit or miss kinda thing, but usually when you tell your doctor the side effects then they know what adjustments to make so that you don't get violently ill with the next birth control pill you try.

There is also the mini pill for women who have a hard time with the combination pills.

There are many different methods of birth control. It's very possible that the kind you tried before wasn't right for you. Another kind of birth control might work much better.

And for your sake, I do hope you're not pregnant. You have so much ahead of you at 16 years old without adding a child to the mix. I don't say that in a mean way - I sincerely hope you can continue to enjoy your freedom.

I'm kind of paranoid of trying now. But thank you for the advice, and I will be sure to look into it. Smile

Thank you for the concern, but honestly Smile ...it's not necessary. Please do not think me foolish for this, but I don't really see having a child as a loss of freedom but rather as gaining an opportunity. I love children, and if I am lucky enough to have my own baby then I am going to believe that this was the path fate meant for me. I can handle this. If I am pregnant, then the child is my future, (that is what is ahead of me). rainbow

Hey guys,

So, I called PP and asked them about getting a blood test. Since they are not a medical facility they refered me to the Sexual Heath Center of the city. So... I called them and I was told that they do not administer blood tests to test for pregancy but only urine tests.

Is a urine test as accurate as a blood test? If you think this is a good way to go then I am going to go on Monday when the open.

Thank you in advance for your input.

The urine tests they give are pretty much the same as any urine test you buy at the store. They are fine, but sometimes two weeks is too early to test-- it depends on the woman. Here is a great site dedicated to urine tests. They aren't as accurate as a blood test, but they work well for the most part.

Clinics and hospitals do blood tests. If you absolutely can't wait, then make an appointment there. Otherwise take a urine test now, and maybe another in a week to be safe. Smile

Okay then in that case I will probably call the Urgent Care Walkin's clinic that is in my area. They have a lab there that I know does ultrasounds, but I am not sure if they would give me a blood test without parental involvment. Right now I am just looking for the easiest way to get a test without my parents having to know until I am certain.

Thank you Maddie34, you've been very helpful.

I would probably take another urine test and if that comes out negative again then see a doctor because even if you aren't pregnant you still wanna see what's up ya know?

Do you have a Planned Parenthood there? OR a Health Unit? Health unit will do pregnancy tests for you for free.. Also, I think in where you are you can start doing tests like that on your own after the age of 16 without concent from your parents. Def call in advance and find out what your rights are as far as them not saying anything.. Good luck! Keep us updated.. I am glad to hear that your parents are supportive. You seem to be handelling the situation really well.. Its nice to hear they're good people and if you're feeling scared when and if you find out your pregnant they will be there for you.. Good luck.
