Back in middle school, I developed mild allergies. When they first hit, I thought it was just a slight cold, so I ignored it, and they infected my sinuses. I was in and out of school for five months before I went to the doctor and got it cleared up. Since then, I've had allergies year-round.

At the start of this year, I didn't catch my allergies in time and I got another infection. I cleared it up at the beginning stages, and everything was fine. However, roughly at the start of summer -- June, July-ish -- my nose clogged up and refused to clear, especially the left side. My left ear is affected as well. Now, for about the past two months, I've been smelling something ODD -- it's like the old-fashioned Ivory soap and blood! I constantly have mucus in my throat; in the morning, I have a horrible taste in my mouth, even if I brushed, gargled, and flossed. Blowing my nose usually produces nothing. (If I've been sneezing, I get clear mucus tinged with orange.)

Other than the allergies, I've never had any sinus problems. I don't get sick very often. Occasionally, I'll smell smoke, even if the house is closed up and the air is on, but it's so rare (once every other month for an hour or two) that it doesn't bother me. I'm taking no medication constantly; the occasional aspirin or Claritin if my allergies get bad. I've never had that 'ammonia' smell I've read about. I've read that wisdom teeth coming in could do this, and I am the right age for it -- but neither of my parents had problems with theirs, or any of my siblings. I'm known for being a bit wound up, but it's never caused me health problems. I have infrequent migranes -- once or twice a year -- but all the women in my family get them.

The smell is seriously driving me insane. It doesn't last long, but if I smell it for more than 30 seconds it makes me feel like I'm going to be sick. Does anyone have any idea what it could be, and if so, how do I fix it?

People suffering from allergies are predisposed to develop sinusitis.
Acctually, acute sinusitis is often proceeded by a cold or an allergy attack (one of the reason for sinusitis are allergies)..
On the other side, allergies can cause chronic sinusitis, throat and ear infections, as complications.
Also, stiffed nose leads to stiffed ears.
Presence of constant mucus in throat (mucus accumulation in the back of the nose and throat leading to, or giving the sensation of, mucus dripping downward from the back of the nose) is known as post-nasal drip, and is a usual symptom of sinusitis.
It is caused by chronic inflammation of nasal membrane lining, and, results from thick or excess mucus.
Patients with allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, can have changed sense of smell.
When an odor is actually present, but incorrectly perceived, the distorted sense of smell is known as parosmia (smelling something like burning flesh, fish, vomit, or garbage)
And, the other distortion of sense of smell is phantosmia, smelling an odor (usually unpleasant) when there is no odorant in the environment.
These unpleasant smells can be a symptom of migraine aura, too.
