a few months ago, I started smelling smoke when there was clearly none around. And sometimes it would be accompanied by really nasty taste in mouth. It was pretty severe when it first started, I was choking at times. The severity or frequency has decreased a lot lately, but I noticed that I could be fine all day, but right after I brush my teeth in the evening, the smoke smell and bad taste in mouth starts almost immediately, I can't even taste the toothpaste. Thinking back, when it first started a few months ago, I had infection on my gum, so maybe I thought it was related, but infection has been taken care of, but the smell/taste episodes continue. I am not sure why and also don't know what kind of doctor I should see. Have you heard of such thing? Who should I see? Thank you.
This is very interesting! I also started getting the curious and annoying smoky taste and smell when breathing and it started after undergoing an apicoectomy one month ago. An apicoectomy is a shortening of the root under a tooth (similar to a root canal). I had an infection in the gum. I thought the symtoms were coming on related to room air conditioning but it comes on at various times, when I am inside my house or inside other places. Previously, I have had two septoplasties and a sinusotomy. This is very disheartening, I will call my doctor and request a treatment for a fungal infection or other type of infection or failing that, an examination or referral to an ENT specialist
Have you recently ingested any zinc cold remedies? These products can cause olfactory nerve damage which results in odd smells/tastes and even a complete loss thereof. I have olfactory nerve damage from a zinc cold remedy (cough lozenges) and I smell sulphur or burnt hair all the time. When the damage first occured I smelled ammonia very strongly.
I was on just surfing to see if anyone had my problem, and was shocked to find how many people smell and taste smoke this happens to me several times a week. It's now driving me mad, it all started after removal of the gall bladder, last winter and has got steadily worse. There are other health issues that have also turned nasty, tinnitus, severe dizziness, to the extent the room spins, vomiting, staggering and falling, can't open my eyes when I'm bad, or I'm sick.
They suspect miniers disease. All seemed to have kicked off from gall bladder op or maybe just a coincidence. How the heck is the medical world not finding out what is happening, no sinus infection so that's ruled out, we all can't be mad.
I had this same problem and found all of these people here with the same. I went to my doctor - nothing. Dentist - nothing. I felt certain that it had something to do with my sinuses somehow so i went out and bought a "Neti-Pot". Also called Sinu-Rinse. I reccommend the squeeze bottle and for $20Cdn you get the bottle and about 50 mix packets. Within 4 DAYS it was starting to go away. I used it twice a day (be very careful to let it all come out or you can get water in your ears which can be uncomfortable - follow instructions to the letter) and now it's virtually GONE!!!!! I'm so freakin happy. This was an awful thing to endure and very annoying that i was the only one who could smell/ taste this wet-ashtray-like odour. It's the cheapest and easiest solution so give it a try! I so hope this helps some of you. With you in spirit )))
Hello everyone I started getting this horrible taste and smell of cigarette and I do not smoke I thought it was being caused by being spayed in the face with a can of off bug repellent when I was at boot camp years ago or even the bagged line and cement product where I work now when I went to the doctor he have me omeprizol for stomach acid I took it and it went away for almost a year I stopped taking it since then because I am not a medicine taker I started having the taste smell again so started taking the meds again and behind going away again when my doctor first have it to me he said some people have acid reflux so bad that when they go to sleep the stomach acids come up the osophagus and burn the lining of the throat just above the stomach I believe this to be true because I use to eat spicey foods with no problem now I am getting older and I feel all the aches. From the first time I was given the omeprizol I stopped using hot sauce and eating spicey foods until just recently before the 2013 holidays and all the coffee I have been drinking at work to stay warm and bordom working outside try cutting out lots of coffee and spicey foods I need to watch what IM eating again I hate this taste and smell I thought I had a tooth infectionot something the first time I got it
