I was recently diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disorder, and I would like to get a new mattress as my current one is simply crap. One doctor recommends Tempurpedic, the other recommends Sleep Number for back pain. Any body with either experience with back pain, medical training or both have an opinion on this?

Extremely eHealthy
I've had 2 spine surgeries and found the tempurpedic the worst thing I ever slept on. Had it in a hotel and after 2 hours on it, hubby and I spent the rest of the night on the floor. It was more comfortable.

Have friends who bought one and had to keep it 30 days before they could return it. Her hubby has a bad back and he made 2 hours and that was it.

There are many people with spine problems that swear by the tempurpedic mattress, mattress toppers.

My own spine surgeon and his associates will not tell a patient to get one. They have all tried it out and couldn't make more than a couple of hours on them.

They tell patients to get a medium firm mattress with a standard mattress topper or without, but not the tempupedic.

On the other hand, what is comfortable for one person is not always comfortable for another.

The best thing to do is go to a mattress place and spend time lying on a mattress, at leas 45 minutes and see how it feels. If it is even a bit uncomfortable or doesn't feel right, don't buy that one.

Also, if you already have back pain, and don't have it under control, it may be difficult to find mattress that does feel good for you.

There is only one!!
I had a $2000/year mattress budget because my husband always blamed the bed for hurting his back. We even had a Duxiana and a host of others. Finally we are done buying mattresses! The sleep number bed is the best mattress we've ever had and we've had it for about 5 years. Also, my husband has one of ta pocket pillow and it helps in the car. Good luck!
