Sleeping and Hiatus hernia

I have a Hiatus Hernia. Mostly I can put up with the symptoms which may involve excessive burping or strange sensations in my throat.

Does anyone else suffer with this problem - I cannot get anyone to understand it so hopfully you guys might recognise it.

Some nights I can go without sleep for long periods, not because I'm not tired or cannot get to sleep but because just before I'm about to drift off finally, i get a strange spasm or sharp kick, burn that starts from the stomach area and seems to wash over the whole body. This can vary in intensity depending on what position I am sleeping but its becomes a problem when it takes an hour to become sleepy again.

Hey, I also have a hiatus hernia and I understand what you are going through. I used to get that all the time and it is very annoying. One of the best ways I found to get that to stop if you are not using medications to treat symptoms is to raise the head of your bed and to not eat for at least 4 h before bed. I also had trouble with putting on weight because I was (and still am) eating alot... the only thing I found to do for that is to find low calorie, higher fiber foods to snack on. I find that sitting for a long time or not being able to eat at least a snack every hours or so will make me feel sick as well. I went though alot of different medications that didn't seem to work but my gastroenterologist finally found one that helps a fair bit. Getting exercise, eating small meals, not eating for 4 hours before lying down and lifting up the head of the bed have been what helps me get by with minimal symptoms. Good luck with everything.

it is the worst thing...having nothing bad wrong but feeling like hell waking in the night feeling there is acid flowing all over you....whatever you eat gives problems medecine doesnt seem to work I go onto these web sites to help me realise I am not the only one.. its is difficult when doctors say you have to relax and not be so worried...how can one relax feeling so grim and nothing seemingly making any difference....Jane

i had hiatal hernia surgery a few years ago, but now at 67 i have another one, and doctors refuse to operate for fear my other medical problems make it risky to have me put totaly out,i'm also having problems with sigmoid inflamation..it hurts and i have swelling that is unsightly.
