Q: Sleep Hypoglycaemia Events

Hi there

I have started a hypoglycaemia diet, cut out sugars and bad carbs, I eat every 2-3 hours. No caffeine, alcohol, dont smoke, not on any meds. I try to have generally more protein than carbs. I have been on this for 5 days, and so far it doesnt seem so bad beside my craving for sauces! I miss you ketchup ...

My question is about sleep. I do get hypos in the day, which the diet seems to help with. I really get the hypos bad at night, waking up heart pounding, sweaty sheets, anxiety, headache etc, and especially in the morning. Ive tried (so far) having various combos before bed - either just protein, or protein some carbs, or just carbs. Seems that I still wake up every 2 hours no matter which, and if I dont eat when that happens each subsequent awakening gets more severe in symptoms. Im a bit worried about always eating in the night, as I dont want to start gaining weight having lost 18kg over the last year.

Is this something that will improve the longer I am on the diet, eg as my body gets used to life without sugar and carbs? I read that it can take a very long time to really feel better, and that its possible I will feel worse in the first two weeks. Any help anyone can give would make me very happy! doctor

Are the night time hypos new since you started the low glycemic diet?

Hi Sue1234

Thank you for replying so quickly. No, they have been occurring for a very long time - I have been searching for an answer as to why I woke up that way for years. The diet is helping in the day.

Thanks

I can't really help but can commiserate as I have suffered the same thing for years. Cutting out sugar, caffeine and refined carbs only helped to an extent. I am now trying cutting out starch altogether and that has helped with the night-time hypos, but I feel drained and tired all the time. I wish I knew the answer. Good luck!

Just keep doing what you're doing, they'll go away in time. You can still have ketchup! They make an organic variety that is not sweetened with sugar. Look for it!
