Skipping periods on Ortho Evra? Posted: 07-12-08 14:15pm
Hello, I'm new here and have a question.
I started ortho evra a year ago and it was
the first and only BC i had tried until
Monday when I asked for a pill since the
patch was making me sick at the beginning
of my cycle every month. I asked for the
kind you only get 4 periods a year on and
the nurse gave me Levora. I took 2 on the
first day because it was the day after I
would have started a new patch, and I woke
up throwing up for 3 hours, so I called
and asked them about it and they said that
was probably because i took 2 but to wait
at least a month before coming in and
visiting with a nurse.
I have bipolar disorder and the past 3
days have been completely terrible for me,
i have been crying and blowing up at my
boyfriend for no reason, for instance he
said something about a keloided scar I am
trying to treat and i started crying
because he thought I was disgusting, I'm
going to get terrible acne, and my boobs
are too small (I liked the patch because
it made my boobs much bigger) I need to
stop levora because I am going insane. I
put my patch back on 2 days ago and will
see the doctor in a few weeks to tell her
about my experience.
The thing is, I have gotten used to the
patch (not the throwing up every 4th
monday) because I know how it affects my
body, and putting diffeent mixes of
hormones inside me is terrifying. I
looked up a website about the different
types and the progestin potency and
androgenicity for Levora were so much
higher than any other pills, way above
what I was used to which I am certain is
making me worse.
Are there any effective ways to use the
patch the same as a pill like seasonique
where I wear patches for a few months and
only have 4 periods? I have tried before
but during week 4 I started bleeding and
afterwards had a very heavy period, but if
I got my body used to it would it maybe
work?
For now, there aren't contraceptive
patches that have prolonged action so that
one patch can be used for a few months.
There are only patches that you can wear
for 7 days and then replace with a new
one. Such prolonged contraceptive action
have only the contraceptive implants and
depo-shots. Pills like Seasonique are
taken every day for 84 days. Then you take
7 inactive pills that cause a period.
Levora and Seasoniqie contain the same
active substances with the same dosage but
Levora-pack contains 28 pills and
Seasonique-pack has 91 pills.
All the hormonal contraceptive methods
(pills, patches, rings, implants and
depot-shots) have similar side effects so
there is no guarantee that by switching
the pill with patch or something else you
will avoid the side effects.
I don't recommend you to make experiments
with the hormones in your body.

If you skipped your period using the patch
(replacing the patch instead of having the
week off) that would work just the same as
taking levora (constant hormones for 28
days). It might not work the first month
or two you try it (and neither will Levora
or Seasonique, for that matter) but
eventually your period will adjust.
Make sure you're discussing your birth
control with your psychiatrist, as well.
Birth control can definitely affect moods
and may interact with other medications
you're taking for bd.
