Q: Skipped heart beats
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 5th, 2009
hello
I am a 31 year old female and lately i have been feeling like my heart skips a beat. Sometimes I feel it three or more times in one day other times I don't feel it at all. This makes me very scared. About four months ago I did a stress echo and a few ecg, blood work and it all came back normal. Ive gone to my doctor and when i tell her about these skipped beats she tells me it is all anxiety related. I dont know if I should ask to have some more tests done or if I should just deal with it. Please help !!!

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
A very common cause of a feeling that heart skips a beat can be due to excess caffeine or alcohol intake. If you take either cut down the quantity and see if it helps. Smoking is another cause that should be seriously looked into.
At times it is due to electrolyte disturbance like sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Hence get the blood levels of these checked.
Heart causes have already been eliminated in your case. Anxiety and stress can also be a contributing factor. You can try meditation, yoga and deep breathing exercises to lower your stress. Hope this helps. Take care!
