Q: Skin lumps and treatment options
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 3rd, 2009
Most of my adult life I've had lumps appear in various spots under my skin. The lumps generally don't cause pain. I'd say they are not comfortable but perhaps that's just an emotional thing because they feel odd. I think they grow a bit over the years but not a lot. A few of them are probably an inch across and completely under my skin. They are visibly noticeable. I'm 45 now but have had them since my early 20s. A few decades ago I had a few of them removed. The method used left dimples where the lumps were. Now I have more of them. And I may have one on my hip that is pressing in a way that causes me to run or walk a little different.

Referring to medical condition described above. What are these lumps called? What are the treatments for them?

It is hard to say what the lumps are without seeing and touching them. The softness might indicate the tissue they origin from. If they are soft, you might be experiencing lipoma. Harder lumps might be fibroma. Removing them surgically is the only way they can be treated. Afterward, patohistology examination might determine the exact type of tissue. However, these benign tumors might appear again on other locations.

Skin lumps and treatment option
Hi, based on your comments I looked on the Internet. I say they look more like the lipoma shown in the firstimage than the fibroma in the second image below. The Wikipedia article mentions injections or ultrasound as possible treatments. Are these methods common and effective? Cost effective?

Is there a typical cause for these lumps? I've had them since my 20s.
