Candidiasis, commonly called yeast infection or thrush, is a fungal infection caused by any of the Candida species. If it affects the female genitals it might be manifested with itching, burning, and soreness.

A whitish or whitish-gray smelly discharge is often present, too. It is diagnosed either by microscopic examination or by culturing. In both cases, a vaginal swab is taken. If confirmed, antifungal medications for local or systemic use might be recommended.

Please note that in many cases certain of the existing symptoms might be signs of bacterial vaginosis, which is treated with antibiotics. In order to check whether it is really a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis, a visit to a gynecologist is recommended any time the symptoms start again.
