After having your thyroid removed are there any side effects involving the heart that may occur. A friend of mine has been seeing her doctor regularly after her thyroidectomy and at this time she is seeing him every three months.A few days ago she complained of lightheadedness and some chest pain and just not feeling well. She came into the Emergency Room and was admitted to cardiac care unit and placed on monitor, were both wondering could this be a side effect from the surgery. Thanks L. Reed

Hard to say, unfortunately. The level of thyroid hormone in your friend's blood would be an important clue, however. A very high level of thyroid hormone in the blood can cause heart rhythm disturbances that could possibly cause the symptoms that you describe. (Very low levels of thyroid hormone could cause a slower heart rate, although this would be less likely to cause the symptoms that you describe unless your friend had other reasons to have a slow heart rate.) Unfortunately, a number of disorders, including non-cardiac disorders, can also cause the symptoms that you describe.

Your friend's cardiologist will, I'm sure, carefully evaluate these symptoms, and will consider all possible reasons for them.

Sincerely/ Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS

Did they check if her parathyroid glands were preserved? You only need one out of the four of them, but they can be injured and not work as well for a little while after surgery. This isn't very common with an experienced surgeon and they usually check the removed thyroid for parathyroid glands to see how many are left. When I had my thyroid out, one of my parathyroid glands was also removed.

I'm not saying that's your friend's problem, but she might ask. It's the only thing I can think of besides being a side-effect of thyroid hormone imbalance.

I hope they find the cause and she recovers soon.
