Q: Side effects of MAP ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 14th, 2009
I recently took the morning after pill on Sunday (11th Oct.), After having sex(Fri 9th Oct) with my boyfriend, we were both virgins so he used a condom but it slipped off as he was pulling out, he never came in me or the condom (which didn't break) and there was no pre-cum, I took the pill to be safe. However I have had a head cold since Friday and don’t know if ‘hot flushes’ are a side effect of taking the MAP or the cold. My periods have also been irregular as in my period would come one month and then not the next, this is making it very difficult to keep track how long my cycle actually is as every time I try to calculate my next period I’m usually wrong. My last period was on the 18th September and I’ve calculated my next period is due around the 16th Oct.
But I was told by the pharmacist that my period could be early or late but how long should I wait before doing a test? And is it normal not to experience any side effects of the MAP?

I am completely freaking out as I don

Hello and welcome to eHealth Forum!

Well, hot flashes can be both due to pill and also due to cold with fever. It is difficult to comment on net. The morning after pills may or may not cause any side effects. They can delay the periods in some, make it early in some and not affect the periods at all in others.

You should look back and see what has been your longest cycle. Wait for that many days before taking a pregnancy test. However since you took the morning after pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex, there is hardly any chance that you will be pregnant. Hope this helps. Take care!
