Hello, and thanks for your medical question on E Health Forum.

Spontaneous abortion (SAB), or miscarriage, is the term used for a pregnancy that ends on it's own, within the first 20 weeks of gestation.

The cause for fetal loss in early pregnancy can be attemted to be determined by an tissue diagnosis of the aborted fetus. Sometimes the cause for miscarriage cannot be identified.

The most common cause during the first 12 weeks include fetal chromosomal abnormalities.

Other causes include:

1. Hormonal problems, infections or maternal health problems

2. Lifestyle (i.e. smoking, drug use, malnutrition, excessive caffeine and exposure to radiation or toxic substances)

3. Implantation of the egg into the uterine lining does not occur properly

4. Advanced Maternal age and

5. Maternal trauma

You might consider consulting a genetic counselor for additional information and advice.

I hope this helps.
