Q: Should I take medication for my ADHD?

I was once addicted to methamphetamine, however I have also been diagnosed with severe ADHD, which interferes greatly with my everyday activities. I am reluctant to start taking medication because the medications prescribed for ADHD are primarily stimulants, which I have had a problem with in the past. I just need a way to function in my everyday life. The psychiatrist that I used to see told me that I was self medicating before, but I don't want to end up addicted again...what should I do?

I think since you have had a addiction going on meds for ADHD should really be something you should discuss with your psychiatrist. This is a very sensitive subject and should not be decided by a stranger online who really doesn't know your situation or anything about your previous addiction. My son has ADD and has been on meds since 3rd grade. He is 18 now and still takes them only when he goes to school. I don't know how he would have gotten through school without his Concertta. I would work with your psychiatrist on taking this slow and making sure that he/she is monitoring you. Good-luck!

My personal opinion would be to say no, don't take any meds for it. I say this because I was on antidepressants for 4 years and they did more damage than good. I have seen family members & friends lives go downhill while they are on psychiatric medications. Also let's say if you go on, if you would ever want to go off, withdrawing from psychiatric medications is a long, horrible process -- I say this from personal experience. I have done a lot of research on psychiatric medications -- check out breggin dot com if you want -- and so from my point of view I would say try to find other ways of coping than by taking medications that often cause the same problems they are being used to treat. Hope everything works out well for you.
