Should I seek a second opinion on swollen axillary lymph nodes?

User Profile
Hi there,

I have had what I think are swollen axillary lymph nodes under each of my arms for approximately 4 weeks. Today I went into a walk-in clinic, as I am away at university and can't get home to my regular physician. I should also note that I have an underactive thyroid/ Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Since January 2011, I have been getting increasingly fatigued and I have also been sick with a cold/flu 6 times. As of 4 weeks ago, I noticed that my armpits were kind of tender so I did a little checking and sure enough, I have swollen nodes under each armpit that feel like lima beans and are about 2cm in diameter. I told the physician today that I have been very tired, my immune system isn't functioning properly, my armpit nodes are swollen, and my breasts are very very sore (more than usual anyway). She took about 10 seconds, pressing VERY hard, under my first armpit and told me that the lump was part of my anatomy. It was incredibly painful. The second armpit she took less time and again told me the lump was part of my anatomy. I know for a fact these lumps were NOT there before as I am very aware of my body. She didn't even schedule any blood work for my thyroid to see if the fatigue I have had for the past 4 months had anything to do with its function and there is NO way I can go home in the next two months to get this checked out. Anyway, does anyone think I should get a second opinion or should I just take her word for it?

Thanks in advance,
Vanessa

Hey friend! In my opinion you should definately get a secong opinion, I mean what's the worse that could happen? If something is wrong with you, they can start treating it so it doesn't continue, and if not then it's good closure for you. If your nodes are painful and haven't been there before then NO I don't think it's just part of your anatomy. Go find yourself another "better" pysician and let me know how it goes. Hope you feel better and please get well soon!

Hello Vanessa, how are you?
I'm not a doctor.
Please let me suggest that, you shouldn't think the worst about what's happening to your body, ever! In doing so, your brain can actualy compute itself to make it happen, so, if you start thinking that it's just part of your anatomy and stop squeezing/touching it, it might just go away. Avoid using underarm deodorants for a while and see if anything changes. Use baby powder if you must. Do not squeeze and or massage it. You could try applying a cool towel and hold it there a few minutes at a time. (simply soak a small towel in cold water, squeeze out the eccess water then apply to armpits). Google/look into Natural Remedies to boost your immune system. (triphala, grapeseed extract, wild oil of oregano, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf tincture) and more.
You might want to consult an Herbalist.
Always get a multiple opinion about any illness/condition. Avoid walk in clinics if you can, those doctors are always pre$$ed for... time, more patient$=more $.
Find a local experienced physician, he/she will usualy take more time to diagnose you.
Please keep in touch.
