shots during 3rd trimester Posted: 04-12-08 10:18am
Ok....so I am in my 3rd Trimester and I
know that I still have to get the shot for
the blood type. I don' know what it is
called but my doc told me in the beginning
that I would have to have a shot around
28-30 wks just in case the babies blood
type is not the same as mine (at least I
am pretty sure he said it would be a
shot). I already had the blood drawn for
the glucose screening. I was just
wondering, am I going to have to have any
more needles poked in me before I
deliver?? I hate needles My arm always is
so bruised from where they poke me. i
can't imagine what I am giong to look like
after having the baby and all the needles
there---ugh.

ya thats what my doctor said to me as
well.
the blood type is incase your baby gets
sick, you and the baby may not have the
same blood type, so they find someone else
with the same blood type.
i had a paper with the things that are
done during the weeks of pregnancy, im
tryign to find it now....the needle marks
do go away, and if you get bruises, i
think you are to tell the nurse who draws
the blood..at least i saw a chart that
mentioned something about that when i had
blood drawn from my arm.
Your doctor would be the only one who can
tell you if you are to have any more
needles, i can't find the form i got with
the info on it, but just call up your
doctor. They wont think its a stupid
question or anything, and you should say
you bruise easily when getting needles,
the doc. is the only one who can tell you
whats next anyways, so just give him a
call.

The shot is called rhogam and that is
because you have RH- blood. 85% of the
population has RH+ blood types.

Today, when a
woman with the potential to develop Rh
incompatibility is pregnant, doctors
administer a series of two Rh
immune-globulin shots during her first
pregnancy. The first shot is given around
the 28th week of pregnancy and the second
within 72 hours after giving birth. Rh
immune-globulin acts like a vaccine,
preventing the mother's body from
producing any potentially dangerous Rh
antibodies that can cause serious
complications in the newborn or complicate
any future
pregnancies.
