I wake up every day unable to take a deep breath without pretty bad pain in my chest and some coughing. The only other time that I feel like this, besides waking up, is after I've been awake for a long time (18+ hours). I could understand feeling like this after being awake for that long (I smoke cigarettes), but something about waking up with shortness of breath makes me think there is something wrong. I've looked pretty hard for similar cases on the internet but all I find is people with single episodes or random occurrences of waking up with shortness of breath-- but, this happens to me every single day for about 15-20 minutes after waking up. After that, it goes away and I am able to breathe perfectly fine.

What could this be a symptom of?
