Sharp chest pains with exertion, brown and black mucus?

My boyfriend who is 41, has very Sharp chest pains when he exerts himself. This has been going on for several months. He has just informed me that he has been coughing up dark brown to sometimes black mucus for the past year. He and I both are really worried? Should we be?

Hello and welcome to e health forum.

The description of your clinical signs and symptoms and history of chronic smoking, indicate that you may be having conditions like Chronic bronchitis or Bronchiectasis. Other conditions that need to be ruled out include neoplastic growths or tumours, causing airflow obstruction.

You may consult with your doctor, and get a few tests including a X ray or a CT scan, which may give additional information to make a proper diagnosis.
