Hi. I have been having for a while now sharp and short pains in my head and do not know why? I am going to the doctor next week but would like to have an idea in my head before I go. Is there anyone out there that has this same experience? They last from 10 seconds up to several minutes at times in various parts of my head.

Do these headaches resemble a stab from an icepick, nail, or needle and typically last from a fraction of a second to 1 to 2 seconds, either as single episodes or as brief repeated volleys?
Do you feel these pains predominantly around eye and at temple and parietal area?
Do the attacks of pains recur in the same area?

I have the same thing. I get random sharp pain in the front, top of my head. It will last a second, maybe two. However, it will come and go for about 10 minutes in the same spot. It feels like a needle is poking me over and over. It happens usually once a day. Any answers?

sharp, sudden head pains
Hello, not that I can be of much help, but I'll share my experience. About 10 years ago I had my first "attack". I got a sharp, sudden pain in the right side of my head (right above my ear and to the front of head...kinda above temple area). It went away just as fast as it came, but scared me nonetheless. I do not remember now when I got the next one, but they became pretty regular, although only lasting seconds at a time. About 6 years ago, they began lasting longer, but not as much "stabbing" but painful. I've kept this pain for weeks at a time, NO pain meds help. I have gone months without pain, the it just hits and will often linger for weeks at a time to this day. I've had two MRI's and it shows nothing abnormal. It is very frustrating. I also have reocurring shingles on the same side of my body, maybe that has something to do with it...some nerve damage? Also, just in the last few months, my daughter has asked me why I was shaking my head (like saying no). I did not know I was. I've done this about 4 times in the last 6 months. No, have not been to doctor as I have lost faith in the medical system. Not sure if all these things are related ot not, could be coincidence? I am only 43. I thought I may have Trigeminal Neuralgia. This is the closest thing I have found to what I experience, but mine is not triggered my touch, brushing teeth, etc. It just happens whenever. Does seem to happen more when I am tensed up from driving or cold, etc. I also have a knot on my back under my right shoulder blade....it gets very sore and inflamed, I thought maybe that had something to so with it as well????? I wish I had an answer for you.

Sharp needle like head pains
Hi I have the same thing. Im 17 years old and it started about september of 2008 so I was only 16. I also was born with a congenital squint and 2d vision and have had 4 operations on my eyes. I went to the doctors about my head pains, I explained that its like someone sticking a needle in my head over and over. She said have I had anything wrong with my eyes and I said about my squint and she sent me for a blood test but they came back fine and then she sent me to an eye doctor and he asked if there has been any history and my mum said that her sister and her auntie both had fluid around the brain but her sisters problem was found with an eye test and the doctor couldent see nothing rong. I have an appointment (1st september) to go for field tests with tests the muscle and something else and I will have to go back on the 1st October for my results. The eye doctor asked if when I have these pains that it makes my eyes water, I said no. He also asked if I get pins and needles in my hands or feet, I said no. Its so weird! I wanna no what it is. Tuesday night 25th August I went to bed and i was cold, so I got in a sheet and under my covers and i finally got to sleep about 2 hours later but woke 1 hour later with the worst headache ever! i could not put my head on the pillow as it hurt what ever way I layed. I kept getting hot and cold. In the morning I took Paracetamol and the headache kind of went, not as bad as that night and 2 days later I still have headache and It feels like I have a fever and I have a stomache ache too. But the eye doctor asked If my eyes water when I get the pains and I said no but today I got the pain on the top of my head but at the front and it was on my left side and it made my left eye water. It freaking me out. I will let you no if anything comes up after my tests. I no I don't help but if you haven't been doctors, GO!

Hi, I have been experiencing the exact symptoms as lisda. It feels almost electrifying (not sure on how to explain). The pain will just come with no notice and it will last for almost 5-10 seconds and it starts in lower left hand side of my head. I get these pains anywhere from twice to five times a day and some days I don't feel anything (weird). I actually just set up an appointment with my doctor to see what she thinks it might be. I'm a little scared, but I have to see if it's something more, or if she can give me something. I think it has a lot to do with stress as I have a 5 and 3 year old (which are always fighting with each other). However, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one and that it may not be anything serious.

Hi all, I am experiencing those sharp, ice pick pains on the left side of my head as I write. They started yesterday, (Saturday) and are still occuring today. Without warning it's like someone stabbed you with an ice pick. I will call my doc tomorrow, but as one other person said, very often doctors DO NOT have ANY answers. I have experieced this issue first hand!!! I went to 4 neurologists for memory loss, balance off, getting lost when I drove the car, not being able to drive the car, stuttering, falling, not remembering what I did an hour ago. They said "some white matter does show in your brain (after 4 MRIs), but not enough to cause your problems. It took a physchiatrist to diagnose that I was on too much prescription medication and that was causing all these problems. I do have to take medication for my heart, etc., but I was also prescribed ativan, amytriptyline, sleeping meds and other drugs for my anxiety. I weaned off most of them. I'm on Zolft only, and those symtoms went away. Four neurologists could NOT give me an answer. They had the list of all my medications, too. One said I was getting dimentia, (I was 56 at the time), one said I had post tramatic stress disorder, one said it was all in my head. Where are doctors training now-a-days!!!!!!! Really unbelieveable. Very scary. So now I have this ice pick pain in my head and my doc will probably have no idea why. God help us!!!!!

Headaches
Im 20 and i get sever headaches to the point that i can not focus they are usually behind my eyes and i as well get that sharp pain that only seems to last a hole 3 seconds mine is usually on the right side. it seems to start in my neck and shoot up the back of my head but it hurts and it very annoying especially when your focused on something and boom here that pain comes. Recently i started seeing a chiropractor i have been seeing him for almost 2 weeks i have only had 2 headaches since, thats really good considering i had them everyday. So for the ones that have not found a solution yet, maybe you should try and see a chiropractor. The doctor can explain to you why you could be havin the headaches and the sharp pains.
