sexually active in between Gardasil shots ?
Posted: 06-18-08 10:38am

My girlfriend is on the Gardasil shot and her mother says that the Doctor said having sex between shots is dangerous. That each time you have sex, your chance to get Cervical cancer increases. Another friend of mine said that her doctor prescribed her birth control for sex when she started getting her shots. I can't find anything about this on the Gardasil website. Does anyone have any experience with this? Or any doctors that can tell me what's going on? I'm confused, and concerned for my girlfriend, and would like to find out if her mom's just trying to scare her out of having sex or what. My girlfriend is 17, a month from 18, by the way.

Sounds like her mom is trying to scare her. The shots will prevent certain causes of HPV that may cause cervical cancer. You can still get cervical cancer without having HPV, but the percentage of non-HPV cancer is lower than cervical cancer caused by HPV.

Each time you have sex your risk of cervical cancer does not increase. If you have already had unprotected sex with your girlfriend and either one of you had high risk HPV, you have passed it to each other. Once you get HPV, no shot in the world is going to prevent it. However, having HPV does not automatically mean you'll get cervical cancer either.

Wear condoms if you are concerned. They protect against STDs and pregnancy. Its the best of both worlds!

Each time you have sex (with a different partner), your risk of cervical cancer will increase. However, in this case it sounds like her mom just doesn't want her having sex, which is understandable.

My guess is that your friend got prescribed birth control just because the doctor knew she was sexually active and figured it was a good time to get on birth control.

If you are sexually active, your girlfriend should probably be on birth control anyway. But birth control doesn't protect against HPV at all.

Having sex in between Gardasil shots will not increase her risk of getting HPV any more than it would have been otherwise. The two are not related; it sounds like her mom is a *.
