According to the data you provided (decreased sex drive and total loss of sexual desire, painful intercourse due to vaginal dryness), you might be experiencing problems with lubrication. The lubrication during sexual intercourse is for the most part done by the female. Certain glands in the vaginal walls (Bartholin’s glands included) produce fluids which are responsible for lubrication. The production is closely related to sexual stimuli which might be physical or psychological (thoughts, sexual fantasies). The hormone production might affect the lubrication because the lubrication changes through the menstrual cycle, although the vaginal mucosa might become drier in general only with years, when the glands tend to produce fewer fluids like most of the other glands in older people. Certain medications might also cause vaginal dryness.
Before taking birth control pills you are advised to check your hormone levels. If you want to take the birth control pills only to solve the vaginal dryness problem and you do not need them to avoid unwanted pregnancy, then they might be ineffective if the dryness is not hormone related.
You might want to visit your gynecologist to check if the dryness is hormone related.
If no problem is detected, then you might reconsider if the vaginal dryness is more psychologically related. You and your partner might want to try longer foreplay before actual penetration. Different methods of stimulation in the genital area might be taught by a sex therapist that you are advised to consult, too.
You might want to consult with your gynecologist on this issue or at least go to pharmacist to check what brands are available.
