asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 1st, 2009
doc i will like to know if a woman can haveher menstrual period two times within one month?
Because i was away from my wife 3 and havlf years.
when i went back to her i had sex with her the first time nothing happened. But about two weeks later she had another mentrual period which brought misunderstanding between us.
In that on the 15th of december she had her period and i also arrived back my country on the 24th of the same month. So on the 29th of the same month she had another period which up till today i cannot understand. i have come back to my current country of domicile and she told me that she went to explain the scenario to one doctor and the doctor confirm that it was due to the style that i used during our sexual intercouse.

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth's Ask a Doctor forum.

Generally a woman has a period only once a month. However if she has a short cycle of 20-24 days then she can have period twice in some months too.
If your wife is on some contraceptive pills then this can cause withdrawal bleeding between two normal periods.

The other possibility is infection or inflammation of either vagina or cervix. The position during intercourse can result in bleeding provided it results in more trauma to an already inflamed area. At times a change in routine like resuming a sex life can cause hormonal changes resulting in an earlier or delayed period.

Other causes of bleeding between periods are hypothyroidism, cervical dysplasia, cervical polyps, cervical and uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, hormonal imbalance, use of blood thinners, genital ulcers, STDs and stress.

Discuss these possibilities with your wife’s gynecologist. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Hope this helps. Take care!
