Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth's Ask a Doctor forum.
Generally a woman has a period only once a month. However if she has a short cycle of 20-24 days then she can have period twice in some months too.
If your wife is on some contraceptive pills then this can cause withdrawal bleeding between two normal periods.
The other possibility is infection or inflammation of either vagina or cervix. The position during intercourse can result in bleeding provided it results in more trauma to an already inflamed area. At times a change in routine like resuming a sex life can cause hormonal changes resulting in an earlier or delayed period.
Other causes of bleeding between periods are hypothyroidism, cervical dysplasia, cervical polyps, cervical and uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, hormonal imbalance, use of blood thinners, genital ulcers, STDs and stress.
Discuss these possibilities with your wife’s gynecologist. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Hope this helps. Take care!
