Q: Sex after total hysterectomy

I had a total vaginal laproscropic hysterectomy on 2/23/09. I have yet to have sex with my husband because its too soon (gotta wait 6 weeks). Since I had everything removed (tubes, ovaries, uterus and cervix), I am wondering after vaginal dryness. I heard that it can be painful during sex. My husband is crazy about a wet vagina during sex. He loves to feel the fluids. I hope this is not too graphic. Since I always had a heavy vaginal discharge (normal female secretions), having my cervix removed will probably stop this flow, I guess. I was wondering if anyone can suggest what to do to prepare myself for having sex for the 1st time after my hysterectomy and how I can make sure I continue to have those normal vaginal secretions that excites my husband. I don't want this hysterectomy to affect our sex life.

Also, has anyone taken estrogen yet as a hormone replacement? What are the side effects and will this also help with the female secretions?

Sex will be as wonderful as it used to be...Maybe even better...I, too, had everything taken out...At first it will be sore so take it slow...I am sure the doctor will tell you what to use as a lubricant...I used Astroglide when I used it and also KY...However, near four years ago the doctor inserted an Estring disc...This I put in every three months and it keeps me so juicy and ready for sex that I don't need lubrication...I would sell my soul to the devil if I didn't have it...It is that good...I never get sore and am always ready for sex....It feeds me estrogen daily so at the end of the three months you can tell you need another.....I don't know how soon he would let you have this as you have to be well healed before it can be inserted...But if you use it, you will love it...

Don't be worried....I live in the land of love and I am sure that you will too...

I send you my best wishes,
Caroline

Sex after total hysterectomy
Thanks Caroline. That sounds exactly like what I want and need. How long did you wait after ur total b4 u were intimate with ur husband? How long was it after you got the Estring disc? I go back to the doctor in 3 weeks, which will be my 6 weeks out of surgery and I'm going ask her about that disc.

This was great advice.

Thank you....I think we waited for six weeks, but I am not sure...The problem is that they sew you up at the top of your vaginal canal and you don't want to tear any stitches out....

I only found out about the Estring not quite four years ago...I was getting sore from "too much sex" Rolling Eyes and the lubricant was not doing the job...Then I also had some thinning of the vaginal canal tissue...This happens with women as they age...At first, they tried a steroid cream, but it didn't work...I am not sure how long your doctor will say as this goes into place for three months at a time and is inserted like a diaphragm....You would have to be completely healed....It keeps you so plump and ready for sex....

If you have any question please don't hesitate to ask...But go it slow...Be gentle....Even though you don't want to.. Razz ..Believe me, the time will come when you can really let it all hang out....Right now one of my favorite postions is my legs over his shoulders...This used to hurt me to do before, because my uterus was tilted...But, not anymore...It is hot...

Enjoy the new you...It is wonderful...

Sex after hysterectomy
Thank you so much, Caroline. This really helps me. I did some research last night and I am just a little leery about the Estring with regards to side effects like cancer, stroke and/or heart disease. What, if any, side effect did you have? What did your doctor say about stroke, cancer, and heart disease?

Research???
Back when I had my Hysterectomy at age 47, I was told about the Premarin as being a possible cause of cancer someday...I have no cancer in my family and even if I would have, I would have gone with the Hormone that my body needed...Still would...

My personal opinion is that we women need HRT, but these are just my words...I proved it to myself when my vagina thinned to the point where I had fissures from too much sex...But, I also believe that even if I was not having that much sex that I still would have been in pain...Our body just cannot reproduce what it can't reproduce...I, personally, have seen a woman of near 61 years old, life completely turn around since she has used the Estring...Before that she was getting sick of sex..Had no urge...It was getting to be a bother, yet she loved her husband...She said the magic words to me "it hurts"....Within a few weeks after trying this, she was a believer...I am not a stock owner in the company...I just speak of the magic of wonderful sex and wanting what I used to have in marriage plus some extras....Personally, I feel why worry about cancer someday or any other thing in the world that they are coming out with that is going to happen to us....I think we are doing fine for ourselves the way that we are all going at "self destructing" a little at a time...

Just my thoughts,
Caroline

sex after hysterectomy
I had my total hysterectomy on 3/16/09. My boyfriend and I have a very intense and active sex life. It has been 4 weeks and we have had sex several times, mostly oral but a little penetration here and there and I am fine! I am still able to have multiple orgasms and I have had no trouble with vaginal dryness. I have no hot flashes. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones but I think that if you read something over and over again from women who have had hysterectomys that they are miserable and can't orgasm and all of this other stuff, you will freak yourself out and that in itself will make it hard to enjoy sex. I'm not saying these other women aren't telling the truth about their experiences, I'm just saying that everybodys different. Wait until you're ready and healed and then go for it, but you and your partner need to be patient and do whatever you have to do to enjoy sex. It's a big part of any adult relationship.

Actually it was awesome for me...The doctor said that I was tilted (uterus I think) and it gave my husband more room... Very Happy and believe me, we have never looked back...It's just plain great....
