I am a 16 year old girl and I have had severe TMJ for just over 4 years. It started at a school concert, and locked shut. Since then it locks shut about twice a week, and take about an hour to open again. I first saw my dentist, who referred me to a surgeon at St Lukes hospital, Bradford. I have tried everything, exercises, gum shield, botox, heat treatment, yoga, relaxtation accupunture and painkillers. I am also seeing a physio at the moment and due to see a physcologist soon. I am taking 2 15/500 co-codamol 4x a day, 1 diclofenac 4x a day and 1 amitriptyline a day, 13 tablets is quite a lot for someone my age! Everybody has said i am too young for surgery, but i am sick of all these other things, and just want it better for my gcses in may/june. Please help me somebody, what have people tried????

Some people have been through multiple surgeries without getting better. Personally I don't think surgery can fix it. I am also young and I have really bad TMJ. I am terrified my jaw will lock when I go to college and everyone will believe I am a psycho because no one that don't have TMJD know how it feels.

You might want to see a psychiatrist and try the combination of meds I mentioned in another post. That is, GAbitril with one of the following: Lamictal, Lexapro, or Welbutrin. It stopped my bruxing and clenching and made my jaw feel normal again.

Surgery is a risky adventure, once it is done it cannot be taken back. The reason your jaw is LOCKING open or closed is normally the little disc your jawbone rights on has become displaced. Sometimes the disc displaced because of a sudden trauma or extreme pressure, like squeezing a small silicone disc between your finger and thumb until it pops out...but it also can happen just because the tendons that are suppose to hold it in place have become stretched or are just weak. So it sort of becomes like one of those little concrete stopper blocks in a parking lot for your jaw. Finding and maintaining the proper position to recapture the joint is paramount togetting it fixed. Best part is it is usually fixable without surgery.
