Hi,

My girlfriend, 29 years old, has had an eye infection since Monday morning (2 days ago). It is only affecting her right eye. It started out with a lot of redness and was itchy, so we thought it was just regular conjunctivitis. But today the white of her eye became extremely swollen, and it looked like there was a blister in the outside corner of her eye. There is a yellowish discharge from her eye. The pharmacist said she had never seen anything like it.

Also, her lymph glands seem swollen in her neck on that side, as well as under her arm.

She went the doctor today and has an appointment with an eye specialist tomorrow. Just wondering if this is potentially dangerous, and possible causes? Of course we are worried she could lose sight in the eye.

She has been prescribed eye drops, I can't remember the name right now.

She wore contact lenses last Friday night so we're thinking she might not have washed her hands properly before taking them out which introduced the infection, she was very tired that night, and wasn't very careful when taking out them out. She normally just wears glasses (she hasn't worn contacts since that night).

Any ideas appreciated.

~Simon

Extremely eHealthy
Eye redness, itchiness, yellow discharge, swollen conjunctiva, swollen lymph nodes are symptoms of conjunctivitis.
Itchiness is more prominent in allergic and viral cases of conjunctivitis.
Yellow discharge that is more watery-like is suggestive for viral conjuctivitis, and yellow sticky discharge that tends to crust over the edge of eyelids is characteristic for bacterial one.
Personally, I think she has a case of viral conjuctivitis.
Blurred vision, discomfort in bright sunlight (photophobia) and pain, suggest more serious forms of conjuctivitis.
Giant Papillary and Giant Follicular conjunctivitis should be taken into consideration, since it is common for lens wearers.

Best wishes!
