I started feeling "full" like my stomach had a lot of pressure. The next day was worse. It was tender to the touch on the left side, above my belly button. I thought I was constipated, so I took a gentle laxative (even though I had a BM the day before). That night I woke up on my right side and the pain was so severe that I considered going to the ER. On a scale of 1 to 10, it was a 9. I also felt nauseous, but that passed a couple of minutes after I stood up. The pain shifted to my lower abdomen, then dissipated. The next morning the pressure was less, but it was still tender to the touch on my right side, just under my rib cage. It is still uncomfortable with tenderness, it's been about 4 days. I am extremely bloated now and it seems like everything is giving me gas (which is not just coming out on it's own, it just kind of lingers in my intestines in the same spot I had the first severe pain). What happened to me? I know I should have gone to the ER, but I do not have health insurance and didn't want the bill. Should I be worried? I have a history of severe heart burn, that information might be useful.

It is, of course, impossible to provide a specific diagnosis for a patient over the Internet. The symptoms that you describe could be the result of anything from indigestion to lactose intolerance or irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease or a bowel obstruction to cancer (among other possibilities).

If these symptoms persist, then you must find a way to get evaluated by a physician. If you are eligible for any charity care, or government-sponsored health insurance coverage, then please apply for such coverage now.

Sincerely/ Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
