My mom is now 58 and she is experiencing numbness both day and night from her hands and legs. Especially night time, she kept being awaken because it gets worse when she sleeps. We have seen a couple doctors but does not help. Please help!!!

If it was just the hands at night, it would probably be compression of the median nerve (carpal tunnel syndrome). However, since it affects both the upper and lower extremities, it is probably a systemic disorder.

The most common cause of numbness/tingling, neurological pain is diabetes. Thyroid problems can also cause these symptoms. Another cause is from exposure to certain toxins (poisons). Stroke or transient ischemic attacks can cause numbness also, but it is rare for this to cause it in all four limbs. The list of causes of numbness is very extensive.

If your mother continues to have problems, see another physician. Sometimes it takes some time to finally pin down what is causing the problem.
