I am a 24 year old female. Following a bout with the "stomach flu" in June I developed recurrent nausea which is worse at night. It keeps me up all night and is horrible. I get "episodes" about every week which last about 24 hours. I have had an upper endoscopy (normal except for mild stomach/esophagus inflammation), blood work (normal), stool parasite tests (normal), ultrasound (normal), gastric emptying scan (normal), and HIDA scan (borderline 33% ef). I am scheduled for another HIDA scan this week (the first was in beginning of August).
I have seen two GI doctors and neither have strongly recommended gallbladder removal. I have been told flattly "We don't know" regarding the gallbladder causing my symptoms. My last doctor told me "I'll leave it up to you whether or not you want a referral to a surgeon". I have been on multiple PPIs (currently on Aciphex, no significant difference, though I have developed hearburn since taking the drug--great). I have tried many antiemetics (only phenergan helps but knocks me out for 24 hours), and most recently Ativan, which also helps but makes me catatonic. My current doctor recommends waiting for several months to see if symptoms resolve (some type of postinfectious IBS/dyspepsia).
I have been suffering with severe episodes for five months and it is destroying my life. I have not noticed any correlation with certain foods, but I normally eat quite healthy and lately have been eating a very bland diet. I am a vegetarian (since childhood). I have not experienced any URQ pain, occasionally I will have a mild stomach ache, but nothing extreme and it does not correlate with episodes of nausea. No lower digestive problems. Can gallbladder disease present with no severe pain but severe nausea? Does a borderline HIDA scan warrant gallbladder removal? I am desperate for this nightmare to end, but I don't want to undergo gallbladder removal and not experience relief (or be worse). Any advice very much appreciated.
