My back pain first started when I was a Freshman in high school. I was doing squats in the gym and I lost my footing and the bar fell to the lower rack. So I picked the bar back up with my back instead of using my legs and put it on the top rack. After that I would have back spasms all throughout high school. These back problems have become more severe with my new job. I pick up heavy items all day long. I'm always really stiff in the morning, my flexibility has dropped, and I have a constant throbbing in my back no matter what I do. My doctor has prescribed me 5mg Cyclobenzaprine and 600mg Ibuprofen and the prescriptions have no effect on the pain. As of late I've taken 300mg Gabapentin and it seems to work better, but it makes me dizzy. I was wondering if I would have nerve damage in my lower back and if so, how would I treat it?

I don't know about nerve damage so I couldn't comment on it. But I do know that arthritis can set up in the site of a previous back injury, so that's a possibility. I have found a great deal of relief from my chiropractor. If possible I would consult one of them or a back specialist. Also, heat pads work great for me when my back feels tight or stiff. I know that I can't wear them all day but applying heat first thing in the morning may delay the onset of pain or stiffness during the rest of the day.
Good luck.
