Q: Severe headaches and numbness

Dear doctor,

I suffered for over an year from stress & anxiety thinking that i got HIV & finally got the strength to do a test. It came back negative & now I'm trying to recover mentally.

Problem is that I get severe headaches like some kind of bandage is wrapped around my head. My teeth also hurt from this pain sometimes (I think like sinusitis) .There is also a slight numb feeling below my knees (mostly calf muscles).

Do u think stress & anxiety can cause such symtomps ? I'm particularly worried about the numb feeling in the legs.

P.S - I used to do a lot of jogging before & have started again.

Well Starcraft, you have a few worry bugs biting you at present. Yes we can have a range of physical symptoms which are caused by stress and anxiety. What we need to do is first of all make sure they are not REALLY physical (medical) symptoms - see a physician - and secondly we need to reconstruct our thinking. This means we need to identify the source of the stress and find ways to reduce the stress caused by that trigger. Avoid negative hurtful self-talk; be optimistic; have positive feelings; exercise; set good goals and so on. Resuming physical activity like jogging is great - gives you something good to do and reduces depression and anxiety.
