Hey everyone, i'm 20 years old and i've been suffering from severe cramps for the past 10 years. I get cramps from 3 days til a week before my cycle actually comes down, then 3 more days when it comes. I don't know what to do. I went to the doctor and they prescribed me some medicine, but it didn't work. It only used to put me to sleep and I had to take them 3 times a day, but I had to stop because I have a job. I have to miss work the first couple of days, because I can barely walk and I'm always throwing up. Someone please give me some advice.

Menstrual cramps are closely tied to your cycle of ovulation. So, that means that you are showing an important sign of of your fertility potential. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's painful and period cramps suck!

Treatment for menstrual cramps can be tried in stages so that you test one set of behavioral treatments options and then move on to other, more medication-based treatment alternatives. You can start by looking at increasing comfort measures, then moving to over-the-counter (OTC) medications, prescription cramp medications, and finally, hormonal treatments.

The main treatment for menstrual cramps are a class of drugs called Non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. Good luck!!! And work with your gynecologist to learn more and plan your stages of treatment.

Cramps have nothing to do with your fertility. In fact, that is just the opposite sometimes. I have severe endometriosis, rendering me unable to get pregnant conventionally and it results in SEVERE cramps. Fibroids can also cause severe cramps. Definitely ask for a full workup, including hormone levels (FSH Day 3) and ultrasound.
