Sever Insomnia at 32 days

I started to suffer from a thumping heart beat at night when I gave up smoking 32 days ago. The thumping is usually on the left side of the chest but also sometimes on the right side. This has caused terrible insomnia and I only sleep on average four hours per night (and only after laying in bed for several hours awake). During the night I can hear my heart pounding and my upper stomach and lower chest area is also 'growling'. It's worse when i lay on my side. If I sit up or stand it's fine.

In the past week I have also started to suffer from intermittent chest pain, mainly on the left of my chest but sometimes also on the right. I have had many heart tests (echocardiagram, stress tests, etc) which are all normal. Cardiologist says there is nothing wrong with my heart and it must be psychological.

I gave up smoking just as the heart symptoms started (after 27 years). However to be fair, I was suffering from insomnia prior to this for many years, although not as bad. Daytime exercise seems to make the heart pounding worse.

Has anyone else experienced similar insomnia?

Stopped 25 days ago until now! And guess what? Crazy insomnia, sometimes I hear my heart thumps irregularly lol, I feel like a monster...

It's all normal. My xray was perfect, heart was perfect. I ate more and slept less, maybe that's kinda straining my heart.....I asked my doc this and he laughed...told me how every sleepless nights are totally worth it because they make up of all the days I will lose by continuing smoking that shorten my age.

He didn't prescribe me anything..

I found I'm more sensitive to hear as in heart pounding more insanely during hot days...thats probably what happens when you exercise...so it's all normal pls don't worry Smile

Hey

Thanks for your kind words. However I am now at 44 days and still have bad insomnia. The beating heart happens every night, but sometimes it's worse than others. I am also beginning to experience this in the day time, accompanied by acute anxiety (which I think is legitimate because of concerns about the heart).

Ive been taking antibiotics for apparently blocked sinuses, so maybe this is making things worse. I have decided to stop taking them today (have taken 6 days of a 14 day treatment). I hope this helps. I never experienced anxiety prior to quitting, so this is all very new to me. I hate it. I will not start smoking again, but I need to know this is going to end. Why do all the stupid advice columns talk about withdrawal lasting a couple of weeks?

Hi there,

I'm a little concerned about your beating heart happens everynight which means you have irregular heart beat. Are you at your ideal weight? Otherwise I would suggest Heart Ultrasound, my husband found out one of his arteries was blocked from heavy smoking and high cholesterol. Luckily found that early and he just took cholesterol medications and Chantix to stop smoking and problems' solved.

And please be strong, it really is worth it. I've seen people living with Lung Cancer in hospitals, they have pipes and plastic tubes shafted down their throat all the time, they have blueish skin and flaky, wrinkly skin from combination of chemoteraphy and radiation.

Just imagine that!!! And my best thing to do when I'm getting anxiety is looking at 9gag.com LOL

I am over-weight and undertake minimal exercise (30 min light working per day.

However I've had an echocardiagram (normal and stress). I'm told it was 'normal'. My cardiologist in his report says he has ruled out heart disease and arrhythmia. My heart beat is not 'abnormal' in the sense the rhythm is technically abnormal. However I can feel my heart beat as if i have undertaken light exercise and it feels sluggish - mainly when I lay down. I have a low normal resting pulse of 50 bpm - which the cardiologist is not concerned about despite the fact it's low for a normal person (non athletic)

I had to take 0.5mg Xanax last night to even get 5 hours sleep (from 5am to 11am). This is ruining my life.
