Q: Serious BCP side effects ?

I recently got diagnosed with PCOS and my endocrinologist suggested BCP's to regulate my periods and get my hormones in control. I have no problem taking them, except I am absolutely TERRIFIED about the increased risk of heart attack/stroke/blood clots.

I'm very young- under 20 years old, and I don't smoke but I am slightly overweight, I have a minor case of asthma and my blood pressure is a little high (I think it's because I am an anxiety-ridden mess every time I go to the doctors though).

Has anyone had any serious problems with BCP's?

How long would you be taking the birth control pills?

Also how overweight are you?

I'm not too sure how long I'd be taking them but probably for a while. My doctor said that when I want to have children I could switch to Metformin but I don't think I ever want children. He actually gave me a choice of either BCP's or Metformin but the Metformin has only a 30% chance of regulating my periods plus it has some awful side effects.

I'm about 20 lbs. overweight.

I see. I think that the endocrinologist has probably already (in her head) weighed the risk of increased risk of heart attack/stroke/blood clots versus taking birth control pills. Given your age and the weight, you might want to target as a lifestyle prevention tool to prevent heart attack ... weight loss would be healthy for you.

However, you need to know that BC pills can increase weight, blood pressure and cholesterol. (source: http://www.mayoclinic.com/print/birth-cont rol-pill/WO00098/METHOD=print)

But cycle-related symptoms, including functional cysts, dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, and ovulation pain (mittelschmerz), generally improve with the use of oral contraceptives. Birth control pills can help prevent new cysts. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome note improvement in bleeding patterns and a reduction in acne and hirsutism.

So taking all of these into account, you'll have to make a decision with your endocrinologist. Have you consulted with her/him again?

There is significant risk with BCP's so you are right to be concerned. I only had one risk factor (age--I was 41) and I ended up in the hospital with pulmonary emboli after 6 months on Yaz. My OB put me on the pill to regulate my heavy periods. Oh, if only I could go back and deal with those some other way. I'm finally done with blood thinners (after a year). My hematologist can't find a thing that would cause me to be predisposed to clotting. Though I was older, I am an athlete, thin, active and with no health problems before this. Yaz was very bad news for me and I've encountered numerous others (most younger) who concur.
