Q: Sentinel node biopsy ?

Just returned from a consult and my dermatologist wants me to have a sentinel node biopsy along with a removal of a melanoma glance .9 Breslow and level 3 Clark. Anyone familiar with this procedure? I can't see the surgeon for another week now and that will just be for the consult, they will schedule surgery after that. It is on my right calf, where will the lymph node be removed from??

I can understand how you feel...Our son has had about four or five surgeries pertaining to this disease...Everything suspicious now comes out...I definately would have all the tests they offer...With his first melanoma, it was quite large...On his back and many colors...I saw it the day before surgery as we were all golfing...The Dermatologist saw it the next day and took it out immediately...Never had the biopsy as they knew it was bad...They then took a sampling of the tissue and sent it to the labs...Got it back in a good week...Then he was brought in for additional surgery...It was farther out than they figured and safety must be taken...He has had about four more taken out in the last 20 years...One very big one on his stomach...Had a hard time stitching it up as he didn't have much fat to pull the skin together...They can be pretty mean...They see him every 6 months and take a picture of his complete body to compare each time...He is fine as you will be fine...

Now relax and get this done and think of how lucky that you are that this is not worse...

Kindest regards,
Caroline

Wow Caroline, thanks soooo much for your kind words of support. I too have a son and am glad I have it and not him. I am 49 so I can deal with this for the next 20 years. I also have plenty of fat and really don't care about a scar so that helps. Upon hearing the diagnosis of course I was a mess, people like you have helped a lot. I also have a great support group of friends, just no one has any experience with this type of cancer and I am scared. I have a pretty strong faith so that will carry me also. I will keep posting when I know more and will add your son to my prayer journal.

Thanks again,
Laura

Hi Laura:

Hi Laura:

Do that...We will be waiting to hear from you...I just talked to my son and he had his body photographed again on Monday..Doctor said he looked great...Passed for another 6 months...You will do just great...Honey, you are in my prayers too...Have a wonderful Holiday weekend...

Just to let you know that because of this disease your children should be checked too...Our other son has anything suspicious taken off by a Dermatologist...He, too, is checked every year...

Take care,
Caroline

I'm sorry I can't answer your question but I do have an issue with the lymph node in the right side of my neck swelling or flaring when I smoke giving me a weird feeling when I swallow. I haven't gone to the doctor at all but I've had this problem for going on three years now. I fear they will suggest the removal of the lymph node and am very curious to see how this goes for you. Please update this after your surgery. I wish you the best in your surgery.
