Labor and Delivery Answer A8501
Hi, welcome to the ehealth forum and I am glad to help you.

Your concern seems to be the self-induction of labor. Various theories have been put forward for the onset of labor in humans but still the cause remains obscure. Many methods have been tried by people world over for self-induction of labor like castor oil, evening primrose, red raspberry leaf tea, sex, nipple stimulation, acupressure, acupuncture, herbs and other remedies but none has been proved to be successful and safe. So self-induction of labor is only to be condemned as it can lead to more bad than good because of effects or side effects of these home remedies.
The onset of labor is mediated by changes in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, fetal steroid secretion, prostaglandins and changes in the tension of the uterine wall as the fetus grows. When the labor will start is not clear.
The best course to take is to consult your obstetrician and be in constant follow up and let the labor start spontaneously unless your doctor feels that medical induction of labor is required in the hospital setting for certain fetal or maternal complications
Hope this helps and take care.
