Q: Seems like bipolar symptoms ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 10th, 2009
Hey there, I think my girlfriend is bi-polar and just looking for some confimation. we will have the greatest relationship, most loving and open. then one day she will wake up compeletly different and feel different. then a few weeks later go back to normal, then out of no where she will change again. I have asked her at these times if she has every thought about suicide, she said yes but would never do it. she says there is nothing about our relationship that is not what she wants and nothing about me that is not what she wants, but she is not 100% happy (only when she becomes this other person) and the problem is her and she doesnt know what that problem is, she just needs help. obviously i cant force her to go see her doctor, but i just wanted to know if i am directing her right. i think she is bipolar and needs to see her doctor, a therapist along isnt going to help her. thanks

It is not possible for me to know whether your girlfriend is suffering from bipolar disorder or another mental health issue. You can try to convince her to see a psychiatrist or psychologist because of your concern for her well-being. Psychologists and psychiatrists are trained in mental health diagnoses which is the first step. Once a diagnosis has been made, you will be able to find out what type of treatment has been shown to be most helpful in similar cases.
