Q: Scars from herpes blisters
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 5th, 2009
Dear Dr.Shterjovska,
Thank you for your detailed answer regarding my one isolated "scar" that has been there for 10 years(it sounds like it wasn't caused my litchen sclerosis!)I remember once years ago(more than 10) having a very big herpes blister there- is it possible this left a permenent mark? Or is it possible another one of those darn ingrown hairs was embedded and "worked it's way out",leaving a scar?I remember the area was very itchy and that how I came to notice it.I also know from experience that when there is an ingrown hair, the area can get very itchy/inflamed. I willseek your advice and see a dermatologist-they take several months to get an appointment though. If you find the time, I would really appreciate your thoughts on these questions!Maybe there is no answer and it's just one of those things that happened and there's no explaning it now!
All the best, have a wonderful weekend! You sound like a really nice person-I wish you were my real doctor, not just an online!

An addition to the answer by Dr. Shterjovska:

A scar from a herpes blister might look very similar to a scar from chickenpox. If you have ever seen one, you would know how they look. The scar is usually slightly under the surface of the skin and can be darker than the surrounding skin. The dimensions vary but are usually the same size as the blister that caused it. The itching can occur in both ingrown hair and a herpes blister. However, genital herpes usually appears in clusters.

In the end, a visual examination by a doctor might help you solve this problem. If the scar causes no additional symptoms, then you might leave it, as well; because both conditions that are suspected as possible causes have ceased to exist a long time ago.
