Q: Scan after thyroid cancer

Hi, I am new here..My mom was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer in both sides of her thyroid in April of 2008. She did the low iodine diet and took the treatment (think maybe I 131) in July 08. She just recently followed the low iodine diet again and had a full body scan done (I-123). The impressions reads that there is "no convincing evidence for recurrent disease". Under findings one part is concerning to us (and keep in mind that WE have the report, have not seen the doctor and won't until Friday, but just trying to get an idea of what this may be)..it says several things..all of which sound fine..then one part goes on to say this: "there is a focus of greater activity in the right oropharynx, of questionable clinical significance". Is this something normal that can show after thyroid cancer or can we expect something else? The rest of the scan looked fine. Nothing else noted. Also, we wondered if it wasn't a big deal since nothing was noted about following this up. She will also get her thyroglobulin report this week.

Thanks!
Lori (daughter of Becky)

Don't worry just yet. Most of the time, this is just extra Radioactive Iodine that gets into the salivary glands. Did they tell her to suck on sour candy to make herself salivate? That's why. It clears out the iodine. Otherwise, they light up like a Christmas tree. Ask the doctor about it and see what he says. He may want to keep an eye on it.

As long as your mom is continuously monitored for recurrence, she should be fine.

Also, make sure to ask if they tested your mom for thyroid antibodies when they took the thyroglobulin test. If she is positive for them, it can affect the test. Most doctor check for them, but since they are so important, you should still make sure.

If you have any other questions about this stuff, feel free to write back. Good luck to you and your mom.
