I wouldn't think its normal although i've read a couple of times that the baby was just behind the sac and not visible.

I went in for my first ultrasoun at 6wees 3 days and you could see the baby, and the sac and it had a heartbeat of 120bpm

Did they do an abdominal ultrasound or a vaginal ultrasound? It's possible that everything's fine but that your baby is too small to see. They couldn't find my baby with the abdominal ultrasound but found him/her just fine vaginally.

Ask them to do a vaginal ultrasound before they start talking about D&C.
