Q: Risk of HIV after blood contact
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 10th, 2009
When at work a guy cut himself and he swung his hand back and I went to look in the bathroom and saw that I had two specks of blood on my cheek. If a speck of blood had gotten into my mouth without me noticing whats the risk of catching HIV if he had it?

The risk is minimal and requires that you had sores in your mouth at the moment. However, you might want to test yourself for HIV infection three weeks after the contact. Negative results on this and the additional tests three and six months after the exposure would definitely rule out the possibility of HIV infection.

There is no risk of catching HIV given the guy that hadd cut had HIV and you also hadn't any internal injury in mouth os your stomach.

If you can be sure that you didn't have any such injury at that time then there'll will be no harm. This because HIV spreads only through blood contact.
