Hi, I've just recently signed in,
I'm 21 and in medschool... and had an occupational accident with an HIV patient, I somehow got some of his pleural liquid on my hand, I had a small puncture on the tip of my finger, not bleeding, not deep at all but still red and cicatrizing, I got a low risk PEP of lamiduvine and zidovudine for 15 days.

my question is; what's my risk for contracting the HIV? I know the risk is almost nonexitant when the skin is intact, very low when the contact is on mucoses and nonintact skin (more than 1cm deep injuries), and just a little bit higher when the accident involves a needle.

I can't think clearly cause I'm really worried about it. I know the risk is still less than 1% but I'm all worked up now (the PEP therapy not helping with anxiety) should I consider that as intact skin or what.. I jus't can't think objectively

anyway, that was my rant, thanks.

Piipipi, Hi! Well, I think your risk is slim to zero. But even with a 1% chance its always best to get tested. As I am sure you know, its free and EZ in the US and in most countries.I would wait a few weeks and get tested just for the peace of mind...about 6 weeks is a good window. Good Luck.
