Q: Ring finger - tendon injury ?

Three weeks ago I was playing catch and the ball hit my middle finger on the right hand. It was painful so I headed to my family doctor and xrays were taken. He said it looks cracked in the joint above the knuckle and slightly to the side facing the middle finger. However the next day he phoned and said no it's not fractured.

Since then I have developed a lump on the inside of this joint facing the middle finger. If I gently touch it and move my finger up and down I can hear a clicking noise.

The joint below the nail does not bend. If I make a fist that same joint will not curl under. When making a fistm the middle joint to the joint closest to the nail remains more straight. Not sticking straight up but straight out ahead.

I also noticed a very small bump almost on the top of the joint closest to the nail. It's not visible to the eye but doesn't click.

I'm also noticing pain radiating now into the hand and into the forearm. These weren't sore before and don't feel injured but wondering if this is to due with the finger problem

Could this be a tendon injury or fracture? I live in Canada so you need a referral to see an orthopedic and my family doctor doesn't seem keen on sending me to anyone.

I am not a physician, but this could be a tendon...My husband had something like this happen years ago..In time they did do surgery....Give yourself some time and see if it goes away..If not, go back to the doctor..Good luck...

Thanks for your help!
Thanks for your reply and help Smile I will give it some time and then go back to my doctor or another doctor. It is quite painful.

Did your husband have similar symptoms as mine? Was the tendon torn or?

I've applied ice, taken Advil etc but no change with movement, bump etc.

His hurt for a long time...It really never got better...I think his injury was from our son pitching to him and he bent it back...In time he had surgery...I know they repaired something as it stayed swollen at the joint...He used to think that a sliver was in it as it would get that sore...He never got rid of the bump until after the surgery...Good luck....

justawoman..

That sounds painful. How is his finger now? Was it an orthopedic or hand surgeon that operated?

I am quite frustrated right now. I decided to go to a walk in clinic with xray early this morning. The doctor came in and didn't even examine my finger, hand and didn't order xrays. He said it's probably nothing, take Advil. As I started to describe the bump figuring maybe he needs to know my symptoms,he left the room.

I will give it some more time and if not I will have to go elsewhere.
