It does indeed sound like a compression nerve injury to the lateral (right side of right great toe) nerve. This nerve passes between the great toe and the second toe, and if the toes are squeezed together (compressed), that nerve takes the brunt of the pressure. This is almost always reversible process. Warm soaks, massage, and use of a toe separator (a little silicone device) can be of help.

There is also an over-the-counter nutrition supplement you may wish to try, called alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), which is also know as thioctic acid. Unfortunately, alpha-lipoic acid isn't well absorbed when taken orally, so it takes larger amounts in order to achieve the blood levels that are potentially useful.

Start with around 1200 to 2000 milligrams of ALA per day, divided into twice daily doses. This is the same as me saying 600 milligrams twice daily up to 1000 milligrams twice daily. ALA seems to stabilise injured nerve membranes and in clinical studies of injured nerves in diabetics, it has been quite useful.
